So you have a brand new digital camera and you want to use it to take expert like photos rather than the routine ones! I will tell you that it’s a very good approach. It will provide you with hours of enjoyment, exercise and something to boast of in front of friends, family and your workplace colleagues. Did I say exercise? Well, yes. You see you need to exercise about the muscles of your brain and your body a bit to get decent photographs. But do not be put down. Put just a little effort and notice your photos becoming professional.
Learn to handle your digital camera properly. Hold the digital camera as still as possible and stable particularly in low light or in shots of swift things like sports cars and moving creatures. The best solution is always to make use of a tripod in such circumstances however it is not always feasible. There may not be enough room to place one.
Hold the digital camera as close to your body as possible even if viewing through the LCD and keep your elbows tucked in. In photos where the shutter is going to be open for a longish time like at night try drawing in breath and holding it. Right handed folks hold the camera with the right hand with the thumb supporting the back, the forefinger lightly placed on the shutter and the other fingers curled around the right side and clasped to the front strongly but not too tightly.
While composing the shot ask yourself what exactly you want to display. Is it a specific object in front of you or do you want to capture your how you are feeling or is it going to be a record of what’s happening before you. If you’re capturing a single item make sure it is large enough to fill almost all of the frame. In case you are too far away get close or else increase the magnification of the lens or make use of a tele lens. If you want to capture your emotions move around the camera a bit until you find a shot that is neat and goes well with the way you are feeling.
The mood of a place can be suitably captured by recording items that are specific to the place- for example ice cream vendors with children crowding around at the beach. When you divide an image into six by three equidistant horizontal and three vertical lines the four meeting points of the lines are where it is best to pick from ideally to place the subject you think is more important. Leave out any confusing detail by excluding it or by blurring the background. It is possible to blur the background using a tele zoom lens or by choosing a lesser f number for the exposure if you have manual or aperture priority options in your digital camera.
Exposure is a tricky thing. Do not totally depend on your camera’s auto settings and learn to override them. If the focus of the picture is darker than the rest of it, try increasing the exposure manually from the auto reading suggested by the digital camera. Do the opposite if it is lighter than the environment.
